Why is a composite pallet better than wood and plastic?
A composite (presswood / sunta) pallet combines the low cost of classic wood with the hygiene and durability of plastic. Because it is pressed into a single piece from wood fibre and resin, the nail, splinter and moisture problems disappear. Below we detail where composite pallets stand out.
Hygiene and food safety
The smooth, non-porous surface of a composite pallet does not absorb water or product; it is easy to clean and reduces the risk of mould and bacteria. This makes it far more suitable than wood for food, beverage and pharma logistics. With no splinters or protruding nails, it does not damage product packaging.
Moisture resistance and durability
A wooden pallet absorbs moisture, swells, gets heavier and eventually rots; its dimensions change. A composite pallet resists moisture and insects, stays dimensionally stable and, used correctly, offers a service life beyond 10 years. This stability enables trouble-free operation on automated warehouse and conveyor lines.
Export and the ISPM-15 advantage
The ISPM-15 heat treatment and fumigation mandatory for wooden export packaging are not required for composite pallets, because the product is already made with high heat and pressure. This removes fumigation fees, stamping and waiting time. We cover this in detail in our ISPM-15 in Export article.
Total cost and service life
Although a wooden pallet looks cheap up front, its short life, frequent replacement and export processing costs raise the total cost. The high reuse count of a composite pallet brings the cost per pallet below wood over the long term. See our pallet selection guide to choose the right type.
